New COVID XEC Variant: What It Is & How to Prepare

New COVID XEC Variant: What It Is & How to Prepare

, by Angelina Zoldos, 13 min reading time

A new COVID variant is spreading rapidly across the globe, raising concerns that it could soon become the dominant strain. Known as the XEC variant, this new COVID strain has already been detected in 27 countries, spanning Europe, North America, and Asia. It was first identified in Germany in August 2024 and has since gained significant attention due to its quick spread.

With the XEC variant circulating in multiple regions, the question arises: Is COVID back in Australia, and could this new variant of COVID reach our shores? As of the time of writing, no COVID cases in Australia have been linked to the XEC variant - yet. Experts warn that it’s likely a matter of weeks before it emerges here, given its presence in Europe and other parts of the world.

In this blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about the new COVID variant, including its characteristics, how it spreads, and what you can do to stay protected, now with concerns of a new COVID wave in Australia.

What is the XEC variant?

The XEC variant is classified as a “recombinant variant,” which means it results from the combination of genetic material from two different variants. In this case, XEC is a product of recombination between the KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 variants. These two “parent” variants evolved from JN.1, a strain that was globally dominant at the start of 2024. When two variants like KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 exchange genetic information, it leads to a new variant like XEC with shared characteristics from both.

So far, symptoms from the new COVID variant XEC have been reported as mild. Since it shares much of the same genetic makeup as previous strains, the symptoms it causes are expected to be similar. These symptoms typically appear within two to 14 days after infection.

Common symptoms include:

  • High temperature
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue

Like other COVID variants, XEC can cause more severe illness in those most at risk, such as the elderly or individuals with pre-existing health conditions. It can also present as an asymptomatic infection. As of now, XEC hasn’t been associated with any unique symptoms or more severe effects than previous strains.

How is the XEC variant spreading?

Like previous COVID-19 variants, the XEC variant is primarily spread through respiratory droplets. These droplets become airborne when an infected person breathes, talks, coughs, or sneezes, making it easy for the virus to transmit between individuals, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces.

Although the virus can survive on surfaces, the likelihood of contracting the virus through surface contact is much lower than through airborne transmission. Airborne spread remains the most common way for this new COVID strain to infect others, emphasising the importance of protective measures such as wearing masks and maintaining good ventilation to reduce the risk of exposure.

Preventive measures to protect yourself and others from the new variant

To minimise the risk of infection from the new COVID variant, it's important to follow basic preventive measures that have been effective throughout the pandemic. Here are some practical tips to help keep you and your family safe:

1. Hand washing

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to prevent the spread of the new variant of COVID is frequent hand washing. Be sure to use soap and water to thoroughly clean your hands, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. This helps remove any viral particles that may have settled on your skin.

If you’re in a place where hand-washing facilities aren’t available, hand sanitisers are a convenient alternative. While alcohol-based hand sanitisers are effective, they can sometimes be harsh on sensitive skin or cause skin sensitisation. If you’re looking for a gentler option, consider using the ViroCLEAR Hand Sanitiser Spray. Unlike harsh alcohol and ethanol-based sanitisers, ViroCLEAR is formulated to be gentle on the skin, even with regular use. It’s available in both pumps and refill packs, making it a convenient option for frequent use.

2. Mask-wearing

Wearing a face mask is another critical measure for protecting yourself against COVID in Australia, especially when in crowded or enclosed spaces. While there are various types of masks available, the most effective for personal protection are P2 masks or N95 masks. These masks offer a high level of filtration, blocking out airborne particles 95% more effectively than other types of masks, such as standard cloth or surgical masks.

For even better protection, P2 masks made with nano-fibre technology are a superior option compared to those made with meltblown fabric. Nano-fibre masks offer finer filtration, trapping smaller particles more efficiently. The Australian-made AMD P2 masks provide this advanced level of protection, with a Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE) of ≥ 99.66%. These masks also meet the Australian and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1716:2012 for respiratory protective devices.

3. Disinfecting your living areas

Keeping your living and work spaces clean is essential in preventing the spread of the new COVID variant. Regularly disinfecting high-touch surfaces, such as doorknobs, countertops, and electronic devices, can significantly reduce the risk of infection.

If alcohol-based disinfectants are too harsh or you’re concerned about toxic chemicals, consider using Australian brands like SAN-AIR and ViroCLEAR. These products are made from natural, plant-derived ingredients, offering an effective solution for killing germs and bacteria without the use of harsh chemicals.

For a quick and convenient way to disinfect a room, the ViroCLEAR Sanitiser & Protectant Disinfectant Fogger is a great option. Simply place the fogger in the centre of the room, press the button for it to release a fine mist of disinfectant, and leave the room for 10 minutes. It works efficiently to disinfect the area, allowing you to return to a clean and safe environment.

4. Boosting your immune system

Maintaining a strong immune system is crucial for fighting off infections, including new COVID strains. While a balanced diet rich in nutrients is the best way to support your immune system, supplementation can help fill any gaps. Key supplements to consider include vitamin C, zinc, and probiotics, which are known for supporting immune health. If you’re not getting enough of these nutrients from your diet, supplements can offer an easy and effective way to keep your immune system in top condition.

    5. Social distancing

Maintaining physical distance is another crucial step in preventing the spread of diseases. The XEC variant, like other strains, spreads through respiratory droplets, which are easily transmitted in close-contact situations. By keeping a distance of at least 1.5 metres from others in public spaces, you reduce the likelihood of inhaling droplets from an infected person, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated areas.

Social distancing is particularly important when you're indoors, as viral particles can linger in the air longer. If distancing is difficult—such as in public transport, grocery stores, or work settings—wearing a mask, especially a P2 or N95 mask, adds an extra layer of protection. Combining social distancing with mask-wearing can provide significant defence against the new variant of COVID.

While social distancing has been a key strategy in reducing COVID cases in Australia, it remains an essential practice as we face potential new COVID waves and emerging variants like XEC.

What to do if you suspect you have the XEC or any other COVID variants

If you begin to experience symptoms such as a sore throat, fever, fatigue, or muscle aches—common signs of any COVID variant, including the XEC—it’s important to take steps to protect yourself and others. Here’s what you should do:

    1. Self-isolate

As soon as you notice symptoms that could be related to the XEC variant, the first step is to self-isolate. This helps prevent the potential spread of the virus to others, especially if you live with family or share a workspace. Stay in a separate room, avoid contact with others, and wear a mask if you must be around people.

    2. Get tested

Because symptoms of COVID-19, influenza, and even respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can overlap, it’s not always easy to identify exactly what you might have. This is why it’s essential to get tested. While regular COVID test kits can confirm whether you have COVID, there are also combination rapid antigen tests available that can detect and differentiate between COVID-19, influenza A/B, and RSV. Using these tests allows you to pinpoint which respiratory illness you may be dealing with, helping you take the right steps for treatment and care.

Since the XEC is a new COVID variant, if you suspect you may have it, it’s important to follow up with a clinic visit. Visiting a healthcare provider allows you to receive professional medical advice, monitor any possible complications, and stay updated on the latest treatments or precautions specifically related to this new strain. This is particularly crucial for those at higher risk, such as the elderly or individuals with pre-existing conditions.

    3. Monitor your symptoms

If your rapid antigen test comes back positive for COVID, it’s important to monitor your symptoms closely. XEC symptoms are mild and will resolve on their own, however, if you’re at higher risk—such as being elderly or having pre-existing conditions—be vigilant. Watch for any signs of worsening symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or confusion, and seek medical attention immediately if these occur.

    4. Rest and recover

Rest is crucial when dealing with any viral infection, including COVID-19. Make sure you get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activities. Over-the-counter medications may help alleviate symptoms like headaches or fever, but consult your healthcare provider if you're unsure.

Will previous COVID-19 vaccines protect against the new XEC variant?

As COVID-19 continues to evolve with variants like XEC, its ability to evade the immune system increases. This can mean that previous vaccinations may not work as effectively against these new mutations. Fortunately, Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is reviewing the updated JN.1 vaccine, which is designed to offer a high level of protection against this closely related sub-variant.

JN.1 boosters are expected to be available soon, providing added protection for Australians against the latest variant.

    Conclusion

As we face the emergence of the XEC variant, it's important to reflect on the lessons we've learned from earlier strains like Delta and Omicron. These previous waves have shown us that proactive prevention, widespread vaccination, and adherence to public health measures are crucial in managing the spread of new COVID variants. We’ve seen how quickly the situation can evolve, and staying vigilant is key.

Continuing to follow recommended precautions helps protect not just ourselves but also our families and communities. Stay informed by regularly checking updates from reliable sources such as the Australian Department of Health or the World Health Organization.

Using protective products such as P2 masks, sanitising wipes, and rapid antigen tests are simple yet highly effective ways to stay safe. These small steps can make a big difference in preventing the spread of the virus, helping you and your loved ones stay protected.
