The human body is an amazing thing and it’s easy to take it for granted. There are so many things that can potentially go wrong, yet for the most part, it works as a clever, interconnected system that keeps us firing on all cylinders.
Our job is to look after it and maintain it in optimal condition so it can keep on doing what it does innately.
Health has taken the front seat since the pandemic, as we have a heightened sense of the state of our wellbeing.
Good health encompasses both physical and mental aspects, so here’s some ideas to keep you in tip top condition.
The Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care recommends adults aged 18 to 64 years should be active most (preferably all) days, with a weekly total of 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate activity, or 1.25 to 2.5 hours of vigorous activity or a combination of both. You should also do some strength work at least two days a week and minimise or break up long periods of sitting.
Chronic lung and respiratory conditions affect almost a third (31%) of Australians. This includes asthma, hay fever and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, so lung care is a top priority for many Aussies.
Beyond medication, inhalers, nebulisers, sprays and puffers, there’s now a new drug-free approach to clear mucus from lungs and improve overall lung function by using an air physiotherapy device called AirPhysio.
“It's distressing not being able to breathe easily, but this clever lung expansion and mucus clearance device offers an alternative way to rectify this frightening symptom,” said Daniel Seldon from Aussie Pharma Direct.
Utilising the airway clearance techniques that doctors have been using in hospitals for years, AirPhysio is an Oscillating Positive Expiratory Pressure device that is an all-natural, simple, yet effective lung training tool that loosens and mobilises thick, stubborn mucus in the airways which make it hard to breathe.
As you exhale through the device, your exhalation causes the stainless-steel ball to vibrate which creates a positive pressure that loosens mucus deep down in your lungs and causes you to cough and naturally expel it out.
The Australian-made and owned lung expansion device is a deceptively simple way of how to clear mucus from lungs that really works. And the AirPhysio cost is negligible in comparison to the expense of ongoing doctors’ and specialists’ fees.
The best thing you can do to strengthen your immune system is to make healthy lifestyle choices. Get enough sleep, be physically active, stay hydrated, and eat a nutrient rich diet to help combat colds, flus and other opportunistic lurgies.
Try to include as many brightly coloured foods in your diet as possible – the natural kind in fruit and vegetables, not the lolly kind! This will ensure you are consuming sufficient levels of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Aim for five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit per day. However, very few people are meeting this standard as evidenced by the results of The National Health Survey 2020-21 which found that only 6.1% of adults ate the recommended amount of both fruit and vegetables, so it’s time to up the ante folks!
Zinc: Meat, fish and poultry are high in zinc, but it’s also found in wholegrain cereals, fortified cereals, nuts and dairy foods. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, check with your GP to ensure you are getting adequate zinc through your diet.
Vitamin C: If you are eating the recommended five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit a day, then you will be getting sufficient vitamin C in your diet.
Staying on top of your mental wellbeing is imperative as the levels of depression and mental health issues have skyrocketed over the past few years.
There are numerous organisations that can provide professional advice about how to improve your mental health including Mental Health Australia, Sane Australia and Beyond Blue.
