Ingredients & Safety
What is the active ingredient in ViroCLEAR?
ViroCLEAR contains the active ingredient Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC), which is used at a concentration of only 0.12%. It is the same amount of concentration found in eye lens solutions and nasal sprays, which is the standard limit set for safe use. In the US and Europe, the maximum concentration of BKC allowed in products is 0.12%, as it has been determined to be safe, non-toxic, and non-irritating at this level.
Here at Aussie Pharma Direct, we have conducted thorough research on the effectiveness of BKC and ensure that any product containing BKC adhere to the regulations in Europe and the US. Currently in Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulates the use of BKC, but no limits have been set yet.
If you need more information on these regulations, we are able to provide it upon request.
Is Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC) banned? Is it safe to use on skin?
No, BKC is not a banned substance. It is widely used in various healthcare products, including eye lens solutions and nasal sprays, at safe concentration levels. ViroCLEAR contains only 0.12% BKC, which aligns with the limits set in Europe and the US, where it is classified as safe, non-toxic, and non-irritant at this percentage.
Throat lozenges with therapeutic sore throat claims use up to 0.25% BKC and are considered safe. In Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulates BKC use, but as of now, no specific limits have been set.
I have sensitive skin. Will ViroCLEAR be safe for me?
ViroCLEAR contains chamomile and native lemon bush extracts, which are known for their moisturising and soothing properties. These natural ingredients also enhance the product’s ability to kill germs and bacteria.
However, since everyone’s skin reacts differently to various ingredients—whether natural or synthetic—we recommend a small patch test first. Simply apply a little product to a small area of your skin for a few days to check for any reaction. Most of our customers with sensitive skin have had no issues using ViroCLEAR.
Does ViroCLEAR damage surfaces?
No, ViroCLEAR is non-corrosive, non-irritant, and non-toxic. Unlike other disinfectants that contain ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, or chlorine, ViroCLEAR will not cause surface damage with prolonged use.
Is ViroCLEAR fragrance-free?
Yes, ViroCLEAR is fragrance-free. However, it contains natural lemon bush extract, which gives off a light lemon scent.
Is ViroCLEAR Hand Sanitiser Spray safe to use on pets?
At this stage, ViroCLEAR is not yet registered for use on animals. However, the active ingredient is approved by the Australian Pesticides & Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) for use in veterinary clinics and for disinfecting surfaces in these environments.
We are working towards APVMA approval for direct use on animals, but until then, we do not recommend applying it to your pet.
Can I take ViroCLEAR Sanitiser & Protectant Fogger on a plane?
No, the ViroCLEAR Sanitiser & Protectant Fogger is not safe to take on a plane as it is an aerosol. Aerosol products are typically prohibited in carry-on and checked luggage due to safety regulations.
Each airline has different regulations regarding aerosols, so we recommend checking with your airline before bringing ViroCLEAR on board. For more details, you can refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) here.
What is the difference between alcohol based and alcohol free hand sanitiser?
The main difference between alcohol-based and alcohol-free hand sanitisers lies in their active ingredients and their effects on the skin.
Alcohol-based hand sanitisers typically contain 60-95% alcohol, such as ethanol or isopropanol, which effectively kills a wide range of germs and bacteria. However, frequent use of alcohol-based sanitisers can sometimes cause dryness and irritation to the skin.
Alcohol-free hand sanitisers use other active ingredients, such as benzalkonium chloride, to kill germs. These formulations can be gentler on the skin, reducing the risk of skin sensitisation and irritation. ViroCLEAR Alcohol-Free Hand Sanitiser also contains native Australian plant extracts, enhancing its natural and soothing properties. This makes it a suitable option for individuals with sensitive skin or those who use hand sanitiser frequently.
